Rehabilitation works on Bagrati Temple in Kutaisi have been suspended under the demand of the Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II. The head of the Georgia`s Cultural Heritage Protection Nikoloz Vacheishvili commented on the decision today.
Vacheishvili said the society will be able to get more information about the rehabilitation works, which he said were carried out correctly.
`We assess the rehabilitation work as of very high quality; however, we have suspended the process under the demand of the Patriarch`s Administration. We shall conduct consultations and review all positions once again to prove that the works are conducted correctly and only afterwards, I hope the works will be restored,` Nikoloz Vacheishvili said.
The issue of the restoration of the Bagrati Temple will be discussed at UNESCO too, where the session of the special committee is scheduled for next week.
Rehabilitation works on Bagrati began in 2008, after the president of Georgia and Catholicos Patriarch signed a corresponding memorandum. The ceremony was held on the inauguration of the president in Kutaisi then.
