OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier, within his Caucasian tour, has started official meetings in Tbilisi. The secretary general will meet the chairman of parliament, the political opposition and representatives of the foreign ministry of Georgia. Cooperation in military, political and economic fields will be discussed at the meetings.
Prior to Lamberto Zannier`s visit, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly passed a resolution on Georgia, in which a term "occupation" is used for the first time. The resolution, co-sponsored by 36 parliamentarians from 9 different countries, reiterates many of the objectives of the Geneva Discussions but puts specific emphasis on the repatriation of internally displaced persons and granting EUMM access to the regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in Georgia.
Lamberto Zannier held his first meeting with representatives of the opposition today. The upcoming October parliamentary elections were discussed at the meeting. The opposition members reported the secretary general all the issues they think would impede conducing fair elections in the country.
"The OSCE is very well abreast of the situation. And the monitors who will arrive in Georgia before the elections are also already abreast to a lot of problems existing here. So, the OSCE, as one of the major monitoring organization, knows all the problems existing in Georgia", Davit Usupashvili, the chairman of the Republican Party said.
