Patrol police officers have left prisons and the situation is completely controlled by the penitentiary department currently. Police officers were sent to prisons after the release of the prisoners` torture videos on televisions. Minister of Corrections and Legal Assistance, Giorgi Tughushi says directors of all prisons except women`s colony have been dismissed and the facilities have new administration.
Tughushi asserts the situation in prisons in normal and is under full control of ministry, ombudsman and NGOs.
The public defender`s office has also confirmed that no facts of prisoners` abuse and torture have been revealed during the past five days. The representatives of ombudsman have conducted special monitoring in Rustavi and Gldani prisons. They have also monitored situation in pre-trial detention departments.
Attorneys of the UNM secretary general Vano Merabishvili and president`s representative to the Kakheti Region will appeal the ruling of the Kutaisi city court by 3 p.m. today.
