Special commission to investigate prisoners` abuse and torture

A special commission will be formed within ten days to investigate the facts of prisoners` abuse and torture in Georgian prisons - minister of corrections and legal assistance of Georgia, Giorgi Tughushi announced at the special briefing today.
Minister said the commission will be staffed with the minister or his representative, member of parliamentary commission for human rights, representative of NGO working in human rights sector and prosecutor, who had never worked on similar facts.
The commission will also invite consultants, famous international experts, observers and human rights defenders. The commission will be funded from the state budget. According to the minister, more facts of human torture with even more inhuman methods were revealed during the preliminary investigation along with the facts of inmates` tortures shown on videos released by televisions. Minister said the investigation has corresponding evidence.
In addition, Giorgi Tughushi called on media to abstain from releasing already shown videos as well as any new video footage if obtained.
