Georgian Parliament approves list of persons detained for political reasons

The Georgian Parliament approved today a sraft resolution on persons detained and displaced for political reasons. The document was passed by 77 votes to 14.
According to the draft resolution, 190 of 215 people were granted the status of a political prisoner, while 25 of them were declared politically displaced persons.
According to the resolution, the parliament is oblideg to provide a legal mechanisms for fair trial for the above-mentioned persons in the nearest future.
The parliament should also provide legal mechanisms for legal status and rehabilitation of those arrested for political reasons and released from prison before the adoption of the resolution.
The draft resolution was presented to the MPs by Eka Beselia, the Chairperson of the Human Rights and Civil Integration Committee of Parliament. The chairperson said the status of political prisoner and politically displaced person do not declare these persons innocent. No political amnesty will be carried out with regard to the above-mentioned people, she said.
