Statement by the mayor of Tbilisi
13.02.13 10:35
Mayor of Tbilisi Gigi Ugulava, who was summoned for interrogation at noon today, refuses to go to the police; however, he says he is prepared to give testimony to the investigation in his office. Ugulava published a special statement on the official website of the Tbilisi government, in which he defines the reasons of his refusal. Mayor says the allegations of the interior minister that Ugulava and other former authorities caused provocation at the February 8 demonstration by the National Library, is in the first place violation of innocence presumption and this is when he and his colleagues were abused and insulted then. Mayor says these circumstances triggers doubts that the investigation of the incidents that took place there will not be unbiased. `I call upon the investigation and reaffirm that I am prepared to give testimony to the investigation at my office. Article 175 of the criminal code of Georgia allows them to apply to the court and if the latter rules with arguments that there is a necessity of my visit to the law enforcement office, I pledge publicly that I will obey only to the decision of the court. In addition, I categorically demand interrogation of the interior minister in person and all other officials who were obliged to secure situation on February 8, in order to resume confidence to the ongoing investigation,` Mayor said in the statement.
