The Chief Prosecutor`s office of Georgia summoned today ex-PM and secretary general of UNM party Ivane Merabishvili, as well as ex-healthcare minister Zurab Tchiaberashvili, who is now governor of Kakheti region, for questioning over ongoing investigation into alleged misspending of GEL 5.24 million public funds on UNM activists during election campaign last year.
The ex-healthcare minister arrived first at the prosecutor`s office of Kutaisi district to answer the questions of the investigation.
Before entering the office, Mr. Chiaberashvili told reporters that he was prepared to cooperate with the investigation and clarify all details he is questioned about. He defines that he has detailed information of the job seeker registration program carried out by the health ministry last year, within which the employment agents interviewed the members of over 600 thousand families and filled in the special papers of personal and working data.
According to the investigation, over 21 thousand people were employed in this project and the salary fund allocated to this project exceeded five million GEL.
Later, the prosecutor`s office went on questioning of the ex-PM Ivane Merabishvili, who was answering the questions during two hours.
"On the instruction of Ivanishvili, 2000 social agents have been questioned and I`d like to apologize to each of the agents who have been questioned and thank them at the same time as they have created very multiple bases - they visited over 600 thousand families and filled in blanks and whole Georgia was able to witness this. The fact is that this government does not care about employment. I hope, earlier of later, that kind of government will come which would acre for the people`s employment and won`t put their political ambitions in front of the country", Mr. Ivanishvili said.
