Statement by Chief Prosecutor of Georgia

Chief prosecutor`s office of Georgia, as well as other respective agencies, continues working to provide proofs for misappropriation of army fuel in the ministry of defense in recent years, Chief Prosecutor said today.
"The prosecutor`s office and respective agencies of the interior ministry are investigating the financial and economic situation of 2005-2012 in the ministry of defense. According to preliminary reports, a lack of several hundreds of millions has already been detected. Exact numbers are being ascertained through revision acts at the moment. In result of respective investigative activities, responsible persons will be revealed", he said.
Representatives of the ministry of defense said yesterday that during the pre-election campaign activists of the United National Movement received fuel illegally in Samegrelo region.
On January 29, 2013, the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti Investigation Division of Military Police Department began investigation on the criminal case. The case referred to the misappropriation and embezzlement of another`s property by using official position.
As a result of the investigation, so called “black registers” and invoices filled by military servicemen were seized. According to the documents, the II Infantry Brigade of GAF illegally issued 12 315 liters of diesel and 11 365 liters of petrol out of total amount to the UNM supporters’ vehicles. As a result, the budget of the Georgian Defense Ministry incurred a loss of 58 536 GEL.
