Report of Venice Commission to be published today
11.03.13 11:15
The report of the Venice Commission on the Georgian Law on Common Courts will be published later today. The lawmakers are waiting for the document to voice their position, support of criticism at the debates in parliament. The main issue, on which the position and the opposition have differences, is the rule of staffing the supreme council of justice. According to the recommendation by the Venice Commission, the Supreme Council of Justice should no longer have the members appointed by President and Parliament and this quota should be substituted by the representatives of the non-governmental sector. The new rule of staffing will be enforced only after the term to the current members of the council expires. The rule for staffing the judge members of the Supreme Council of Justice will be also changed. The article of the draft law, according to which all members of the council except the chairperson of the Supreme Court of Georgia, will be suspended their duties right after the new law is enforced, will be removed from the new version of the draft law.
