NATO envoy responds to Russian Foreign Minister
NATO Secretary General`s Special Representative to South Caucasus and Central Asia, James Appathurai has posted on facebook in response to the interview of the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to Abkhazian media regarding Georgia`s breakaway Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
`It is clear that Russia has not (yet) changed its position on S. Ossetia and Abkhazia,` this is how Appathurai began his post. `But this standoff is not just a small issue in a corner of Europe. It is an irritant in Russia`s relations with the West, makes Russia`s other neighbours worried, and is undermining conventional arms control across Europe. There needs to be compromise, one which respects international law,` Appathurai has posted.
Russian Foreign Minister announced in his televised remarks on Sunday that the West was still applying “double standards” in its position on the international status of the breakaway Georgian provinces of Abkhazia and South Ossetia`.
`Our Western partners – along with some other countries – are still strongly biased in regard to the republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia,` Lavrov has said.
