Ombudsman disapproves the manner of minaret demolition in Chela
Georgia`s Public Defender has disapproved the manner in which the minaret was demolished in Akhaltsikhe region`s village of Chela a few days ago. The incident sparked protest of local Muslims and criticism of opposition. Public Defender was in Mtskheta region today, where he spoke about the incident. He said the Revenue office and the customs department had sufficient reasons for demolition of the minaret; however, the officials did not take into consideration the sensitiveness of the process. `They had legal arguments, evidences and we can confirm that both the investigation and the customs office had a right of demolition. Unfortunately, such sensitive issue should have been treated a bit differently and the officials did not foresee that such approach to the religious issue would be followed by protests,` Nanuashvili said.
