20 years since the Fall of Sokhumi, Abkhazia
Twenty years have passed since Sukhumi fell on September 27, 1993 after 13-month and 13-day armed conflict in Abkhazia, Georgia. Fifteen thousand Georgians were killed in the war and 300,000 fled their homes and since then they live in various regions of Georgia.
Russian occupants and the representatives of the Abkhazian separatist regime shot dead the head of the Abkhazian supreme government Zhiuli Shartava and thirty other people around him on the day of fall of Sokhumi. Georgian army lost control on Ochamchire on September 29, 1993 and on Gali district - on September 30. Since then, Abkhazia is under the control of the Russian Federation.
On the anniversary of the tragedy, which coincided with the Orthodox Christian Holiday of Ascension of the Cross, a special march of worshippers was held from the Hero Square towards the Holy Trinity Cathedral. The march was organized by the religious leaders and the worshippers will carry a new Icon painted by the blessing of the Patriarch of Georgia, which is dedicated to the tragedy of Abkhazia and it was entitled `The Joy of All the Sorrowful`. Catholicos Patriarch will conduct a holy rite and will pray for the reconciliation of Abkhazian and Georgian peoples. His Holiness will also conduct civil funeral for the souls of those who died in Abkhazia.
Politicians, members of the government, Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili went to the memorial of heroes on Heroes Square in Tbilisi to commemorate all those soldiers who fell on the battlefield.
