Chief Prosecutor releases statement following controversy on his conviction

24.12.13 17:26

Georgia`s Chief Prosecutor Otar Partskhaladze has released a special statement following the scandal of his alleged conviction by German judiciary. Otar Partskhaladze`s statement was published on the website of the prosecutor`s office. Partskhaladze says that this statement is addressed to Georgian society and not to those opponents, who run dirty campaign against him.
`The dirty campaign launched against me recently has reached its maximum. It`s obvious that the intensification of investigation on a number of high-profile criminal cases has `annoyed` our opponents and they launched dirty tricks to discredit my office and me. To be honest, I don`t think it`s reasonable to respond to them, because their motive and interest is clear and the society is aware of this. I consider myself obliged to make definitions on this issue only due to the high public interest and the society was misled.
I really visited Germany in 2000, where I had an incident with German police. An officer, who confused me with another person, made a mistake and insulted me physically and the incident occurred in a public place. After the dialogue with the police officers and based on the circumstances of the case, I was charged with a conflict with the police officer.
I want to state that this incident was not followed with my deportation or other compulsory measures against me, which proves my innocence. I should also underline that after that incident, I visited Germany on personal visits facing no problems of entry or leaving the country. I want to ask my compatriots not to follow the dirty campaign launched against the prosecutor`s office of Georgia. I consider myself obliged to explain the details of the incident that occurred in Germany in 2000. This explanation is addressed to Georgian society and not to those personalities, who are trying to discredit me and my office in order to cover their crimes,` Chief prosecutor said in the statement.
Chief prosecutor has also published the copy of his diploma, to downplay the suspicions about his education.
