Public Defender comments on controversy about surrogacy
Public Defender of Georgia Ucha Nanuashvili has commented on the issue of surrogacy and artificial insemination in a statement posted on his official facebook page. Nanuashvili says that only today he found time to read the patriarch`s Christmas Epistle, in which the surrogacy and artificial insemination were assessed as undesirable means of reproduction and the children born this way would be problematic for the society, while the family having children born with these ways, could not be happy. Nanuashvili says the issue is very sensitive and dangerous, because the children, who were born by means of surrogacy or artificial insemination, were facing danger of being discriminated. Nanuashvili says such statements from a person, who has greatest public and national confidence, were very risky.
`The state of the families, who are preparing to have children by means of surrogacy or artificial insemination, should be also taken into consideration. It`s very regrettable that the author of the text did not pay attention to the interests of such people and the pain, which they would feel after reading out this message. According to the convention of the Children`s Rights, the government is obliged to protect the rights of every child regardless of differences. All children have a right to live and develop in the frames of the major rights and freedom despite of the ways they were born. I think that discussion of the issues like this should be done more carefully because this may infringe the rights of the children. I wish you Merry Christmas,` Nanuashvili wrote.
