Chief of General Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces Major-General Vakhtang Kapanadze met with his Afghan counterpart in the framework of his official visit to the Republic of Afghanistan. Deputy Defence Minister Irakli Gegechkori attended the meeting. General Sher Mohammad Karimi hosted the Georgian delegation at the headquarters of the General Staff of Afghanistan.
At the meeting the sides discussed the issues of strengthening bilateral relations, cooperation in the field of security and education of the Afghan military at the Georgian military educational institutions after accomplishment of the ISAF mission.
General Sher Mohammad Karimi thanked the Georgian side for its contribution to providing security in the Helmand Province. According to General Karimi, Georgian military are serving in the most difficult region of Afghanistan and security situation has been considerably improved since their deployment. As he outlined, with their assistant Afghan side will be able to carry our transition step-by-step and take over the responsibility for the security of the country. By the end of the official visit Chief of General Staff and Deputy Defence Minister visited the Georgian platoon stationed at the base "Phoenix". During his visit to the Georgian contingent under the "Task Force Tarpon", Major-General Kapanadze awarded 10 military servants for their contribution to strengthening the defence capabilities of the country. They received the medals "Devoted to the Motherland". Six U.S. soldiers also received awards "General Mazniashvili" for development of military cooperation between Georgia and the U.S.
Russian helicopters have violated Georgian airspace - several helicopters flew over the Georgian controlled territory from the occupied Tskhinvali Region yesterday and from the occupied Abkhazia today.
President of Georgia paid tribute to the memory of Georgian national hero, Zhiuli Shartava on his 70th anniversary. Giorgi Margvelashvili announced at the memorial today that by commemorating Zhiuli Shartava, he was also paying tribute to all, who fell in the tragedy of Abkhazia.
Today the first National Hero of independent Georgia – Zhiuli Shartava would become 70 years old. Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili together with Defence Minister Irakli Alasania, other members of Georgian Government and MPs paid a tribute to the memory of Zhiuli Shartava at Saburtalo Pantheon.
Two tourists were killed, two others are missing and only one of the crew survived in an avalanche in Ushguli. The survived tourist contacted the rescue service for help in Ushguli. Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia has already confirmed the report about the death of tourists.
Interpol is considering the request of the Ukraine`s government to issue an arrest warrant for ousted president Viktor Yanukovych. The international organization has received an official letter from the Ukraine`s government and will publish the order warrant on its website soon.
