NATO NC hosted by President Margvelashvili

12.02.14 10:34

Today President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili hosted Chairman of the NATO Military Committee General Knud Bartels within the NATO MC visit to Georgia. Minister of Georgia Irakli Alasania and Chief of General Staff of GAF Major-General Vakhtang Kapanadze as well as Ambassador of Georgia to NATO Levan Dolidze, Military Representative of Georgia to North-Atlantic Council COL Irakli Dzneladze and Head of NATO Liaison Office William Lahue attended the meeting. Following the meeting, Georgian President and Chairman of NATO MC made joint statements for the media representatives  in the Government of Chancellery. President of Georgia thanked the members of MC and especially, Chairman of the Committee   General Knud Bartels for visiting Georgia: “this visit in Georgia is unprecedented and proves  to the firm support of the Alliance towards our country, which is  also an important incentive for further enhancement of bilateral cooperation. I believe that NATO-Georgia partnership will continue in future and will have an intensive character. During the meeting we had an opportunity to talk about the future formats of further cooperation between the Alliance and Georgia and to underscore the progress achieved in this area, as the important factor for NATO  integration. Georgia still stands ready to provide its contribution to global security. After 2014 two battalions of GAF continue fulfilling their duties  in Afghanistan  to  maintain peace and stability there. Georgia also confirms its readiness to take part in the post-ISAF operation and offers the Alliance its own infrastructure to this end. I also want to express my gratitude for the support of Georgia`s involvement in NATO  Response Force. I hope that the achievements in democratic development of Georgia and defence sphere will receive adequate assessment at the upcoming 2014 summit  in Great Britain.” “It has been an honor to meet with you your  Excellency. We have discussed a wide range of issues, from Georgia’s strong contribution to NATO operations to progress in security reforms. As Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, I can say that NATO-Georgia military cooperation is constructive, pragmatic and exemplary. Georgia is the largest non-NATO contributor to ISAF. I’d like to use this opportunity to express my thanks to Georgia for this contribution and particularly to express my condolences to the families of those who have been killed in the action and of course, those who were wounded in action. It has pledged to support the NATO-led mission to train, advice and assist the Afghan National Security Forces after 2014 and to participate in the NATO Response Force in 2015. This dynamism in terms of military engagements is a significant demonstration of Georgia’s commitment to NATO and we look forward to enhancing military cooperation after 2014. NATO agreed at the Bucharest Summit in 2008, Georgia will become a member of NATO, once it fulfills the necessary criteria. Georgia has made solid progress in its defence reforms, which allows for excellent military cooperation at all levels between Georgia and NATO. We will continue to support these reforms and we look forward to discussing Georgia’s progress in terms of transformation in the security sector in our Military Committee meeting tomorrow”, declared General Bartels.
