Lawmakers start to discuss amendments to Electoral Code
Georgian lawmakers begin to discuss the amendments to the Electoral Code of Georgia. The inter-faction group will discuss the details of the draft amendments at the sessions of the parliamentary committees.
The amendments will be made to the several laws, including the rise of the minimum threshold for the direct election of the mayors in all self-governing cities - according to the proposed draft, 33% threshold will be imposed for the election of governors and 40% threshold for the election of mayors.
However, yesterday, the Prime Minister of Georgia proposed an initiative on increasing the threshold for the election of mayors up to 50%. Majority MPs have already approved the initiative of Irakli Gharibashvili, while the United National Movement still objects to numerous problems in the electoral legislation.
