EU Foreign Minister summoned for emergency summit
The foreign ministers of the 28 EU nations have been summoned for an emergency summit on Thursday to discuss the situation in Ukraine. Violence on Tuesday led to 25 deaths, and EU sanctions may be on the horizon.
The meeting is scheduled for the noon, but before that the representatives of the German, French and Poland`s foreign ministries will look into the details of the situation in Kiev. They will arrive in Ukraine`s capital this morning and join the colleagues in Brussels only afterwards.
President of France, who hosted German Chancellor and EU Commissioner in Paris, calls for imposing sanctions against Ukraine`s authorities. Merkel in his turn reported the details of her meeting with Russian president Vladimir Putin.
Kremlin`s press service reports that Putin advised Merkel that the west should abstain from voicing allegations against the Ukraine`s authorities and be more critical while discussing the activities of the opposition.
Meanwhile, NATO Secretary General has briefly commented on the situation in Ukraine.
`I strongly urge the Ukrainian government to refrain from further violence. If the military intervenes against the opposition, Ukraine`s ties with NATO will be seriously damaged,` Rasmussen`s statement was published on the organization`s website.
