NGOs release statement on Rustavi2 case

12.05.14 10:20

Some non-governmental organizations have released a special statement following the controversy of the release of the records of politicians` telephone conversations. The TV Company asserts they obtained the footage from an employ of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, whose identity is still held secret by the management.
The NGOs say in the statement that the television or any other media source will not be held responsible for obtaining or releasing the secret video or audio recordings especially where there is a high public interest on a specific case. According to the statement, in this case Rustavi2 is protected by the law on Freedom of Speech and Expression.
`The activities of the TV company entirely meets the Code of Broadcasters` Conduct`, which stipulates that obtaining and releasing information by secret means is justifiable, when the case has high public interest. In case the prosecutor`s office starts investigation on the release of the recordings by Rustavi2, it will be a concerning precedent of restricting the freedom of media, which will in its turn raise doubts that this persecution is caused by the circumstances that the contents of the released tapes is disturbing the government and therefore, there is an attempt to overshadow a crime,` the statement says.
