GD can no longer withdraw its candidate in Marneuli
The candidate of the Georgian Dream coalition to the Marneuli election district can no longer withdraw its registration as the CEC has already printed all ballots and any decision of the kind will be just a verbal statement. Merab Topchishvili will run for the governor`s position in the aforementioned district despite the recommendation of the Georgian Dream party to withdraw from the local government elections.
In addition, the Central Election Commission has also defined that any statement will remain a statement from now on, as the ballots have been already printed and the name of all candidates will be in the list of all other candidates and counted ordinarily.
`Public statements can be made on withdrawing candidacy, but this can no longer change anything because the names of all candidates will remain in the ballots and counted just like the rest of the candidates,` the CEC official has said.
The ruling party called on its candidate to Marneuli district to withdraw its candidacy from elections in order to avoid ethnic clashes or dispute in the region, however, Topchishvili disapproved the decision of the ruling party and refused to do so. He was holding negotiations with the head office of the GD last night, but refused to report the details of the meeting to media. The final decision of the candidate is yet unknown. His supporters rallied outside the GD office last night.
