Prime Minister comments on election results in Marneuli

16.06.14 14:06

The candidate of the ruling party for the governor of the Marneuli district has gained the majority of votes - even though the political council of the Georgian Dream had recommended Merab Topshishvili to withdraw from the race for evading any possible clashes on ethnic grounds in the region which is mostly populated by ethnic minorities, the CEC did not remove the candidate from the ballots as the ballots were already printed and no changes were available. At the same time, the candidate of the ruling party objected to the recommendation of his party, saying he would run in these elections and so it happened - Topchishvili won the race in Marneuli.
Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili had to make definitions in this regards at the briefing today. He said it was the will of the people, who elected their representative in the local government and therefore, the government had to obey it.
`A very interesting precedent occurred in Marneuli: even though we had recommended our candidate to withdraw from elections, you know that the deadlines were over and it was no longer possible. It happened so that the people made a decision and voted for the GD candidate, therefore, we have not right to oppose to their decision, but we should respect this choice,` Prime Minister said.
According to the preliminary results of the vote count by the CEC, Topchishvili enjoyed the support of 52.48% of votes, while the UNM candidate, Akmamed Imamkuliyev - 31.75%.
