Candidates to occupy ombudsperson`s position proposed

Consultations are in progress over a possible candidate, which will occupy the position of Georgia`s public defender, which is vacant now.
According to the law of Georgia, the Public Defender of Georgia is appointed by a majority of all members of the Parliament of Georgia. Candidates can be nominated by the President of Georgia, parliamentary factions or a group of at least 6 parliament members who do not belong to any faction.
The Georgian Dream coalition, which won the parliamentary elections held in teh country on October 1, 2012, is discussing their candidates, while representatives of the civil sector have presented their own ones.
Several candidates of Georgia`s Public Defender were nominated today, among them - human rights activist Lia Mukhashavria, head of Georgian Young Lawyers Association (GYLA) NGO Tamar Chugoshvili, member of GYLA Tamar Gurchiani, member of parliamentary committee for human rights Dimitri Lortkipanidze and attorney Gela Nikolaishvili.
