Discussions over candidates for ombudsperson continue in Georgia

Discussions over the way of electing Public defender in Georgia intensively continue in teh country. According to the electoral program of the leader of the Georgian Dream coalition, which has won the parliamentary elections, the person supported by the full composition of the parliament as well as the opposition majority, will be elected a public defender in the country.
According to the program, if a candidate does not gain support of the legislative body, then the president of Georgia, the chairperson of the constitutional court and the chairperson of the constitutional court elect from the candidates presented to the parliament by majority of votes.
Lawyers expressed today their concerns saying that the coalition`s program does not comply with the Georgian Constitution.
Representatives of the Georgian Dream said the issue will not be impeded by any problem as they are going to elect a public defender in accordance with the acting legislation that means the candidate is supposed to be supported by the full majority of the parliament.
The non-governmental sector already introduced today lawyer Tamar Gurchiani at the position of the public defender of teh country. 39 NGOs supported her candidate. President of the Georgian Young Lawyers Association said Tamar Gurchiani has a big experience in the filed of human rights protection. She had been working on freedom of media during years.
Another part of the non-governmental sector proposed yesterday candidate of Lia Mukhashavria, who has been supported by the Independent Experts Club and the Young Barristers NGO.
Lawyer Gela Nikolaishvili and Dimitri Lortkipanidze are also among proposed candidates for public defender`s position.
