20.10.12 16:23
Georgia`s satellite television station, PIK (Short for Perviy Informatsioniy Kavkazkiy, or First Caucasus Information) has stopped broadcasting after the Georgian Public Broadcaster (GPB) revoked a contract with the TV-station today.
Employees of the PIK TV demand explanations regarding turning off the channel-s signal. About 450 employees have been left jobless. They have worked out a special petition, which demands from the board of the GPB dismissal of Director General Gia Chanturia.
"We want an audit to be carried out in order to ascertain where the funds are. But first of all we demand protection of journalists` rights, freedom of speech, we demand to be available on air in order that our onlookers be able to watch PIK TV. We have caused no problems to anyone. We are unbiased and professional journalists. We have done nothing that could be a reason for turning the channel off. But if the reasons exist, we have a right to be told about them", Ekaterine Kotrikadze, the head of the news department of PIK said.
