Saakashvili delivered speech at UN General Assembly

Democracy, rule of law, human rights, free society open, transparent and fair elections - these were the main values about which Georgian President focused on his speech delivered at the UN 67th General Assembly. Mikheil Saakashvili said on these values the state of Georgia was founded.

President called on the international society to make timely response on the threats, which Georgia was facing from its northern neighbors and focused on the military exercises conducted along its borders.

`We appeal to you today because the very institution, the United Nations, was created to protect and defend the integrity of all nations against dangers like this one, to make sure that the world would never be again a lawless ocean where big sharks can eat smaller fish without the world to react,` Saakashvili said.

President condemned the facts of prison abuse that was revealed in Georgian penitentiary a few days ago and said that the government of Georgia made the response to the violence adequate to a democratic state. He widely spoke about the reforms which were carried out in the penitentiary reforms and said that the fundamental changes in that system were already underway.
