Saakashvili delivered speech at UN General Assembly

Democracy, rule of law, human rights, free society open, transparent and fair elections - these were the main values about which Georgian President focused on his speech delivered at the UN 67th General Assembly. Mikheil Saakashvili said on these values the state of Georgia was founded.
President called on the international society to make timely response on the threats, which Georgia was facing from its northern neighbors and focused on the military exercises conducted along its borders.
`We appeal to you today because the very institution, the United Nations, was created to protect and defend the integrity of all nations against dangers like this one, to make sure that the world would never be again a lawless ocean where big sharks can eat smaller fish without the world to react,` Saakashvili said.
President condemned the facts of prison abuse that was revealed in Georgian penitentiary a few days ago and said that the government of Georgia made the response to the violence adequate to a democratic state. He widely spoke about the reforms which were carried out in the penitentiary reforms and said that the fundamental changes in that system were already underway.
President also touched the upcoming parliamentary elections saying the environment in the country was really competitive. He emphasized the participation of international monitors in this process

Mikheil Saakashvili said those, who wanted to change this kind of dynamics in Georgia, should know that supremacy of law, transparence and democracy had to alternative. He said it was not only the position of the government, but Georgian people too, which would be proved at the parliamentary elections by Georgian society. He said this process would continue.
UN General Assembly was opened yesterday. The assembly is attended by the leaders and senior diplomats of the 116 member states. The session has agenda of 150 issues, most of which refer to international conflicts, situation in Middle East, nuclear threats and the ways of its evasion. Human rights defense and development of international law is also among the issues that will be discussed by the participants of the assembly.
