Moscow concerned about NATO declaration

24.05.12 19:39

Moscow has been disappointed by the statements supporting Georgia made at the 2012 Chicago Summit. The Russian foreign ministry commented today on the decision adopted at the summit.

Spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry Alexander Lukashevich said at the press conference today Russia is concerned about the declaration adopted by the member states of the alliance.

"We are concerned that the NATO reaffirmed earlier decisions and called on Russia to reconsider its decision to recognize independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

"We regret that NATO did not have appropriate conclusions from the tragic events of August 2008 year "- he added.

Lukashevich said that the text of the Chicago Declaration accidentally or intentionally committed overt political and factual errors. He gave an example of the Medvedev-Sarkozy plan of August 12, 2008 formulating the "basic aspects of resolving the consequences of the Saakashvili regime in South Ossetia", which was called a cease-fire agreement.

"Russia is accused of some kind of non-fulfillment of the plan, although the last Russian soldier left the territory of Georgia in October 2008, - he said. - "The current political and legal reality has been significantly distorted. Whoever would like everything was differently, independent and sovereign Abkhazia and South Ossetia have become an important and integral part of the world map in this part."
